Collectibles-General (Antiques)/pro refinish or DIY?

Question
I have a mahogany Duncan Phyfe dining room table & chairs, about 50 yrs old, from my grandmother.  It is in pretty good shape; the table has some hazing and cracking, but overall has a high gloss shine.  A pro wants to refinish the table for $1150, kinda steep for me.  As a novice, I wonder if I can do it myself with Howard's Restore-a-Finish, or is that better left to the pros?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Sheri
Nice to hear from you.
Sheri I see nothing wrong with trying this process.
Apparently this stuff helps with the hazing but I don't think it will help the cracked finish.
Why not give it a try, eleven hundred dollors is kinda steep for most folks, and it could very well be the fix.
Kind Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
