Question

rosewood highboy dress
I'm needing to sell my great aunt's bedroom set that I have had since she passed away in the 1970's. It has headboard/footboard, five drawer highboy, and vanity with mirror. I broke the mirror moving years ago and the paper backing on the mirror was dated if I recall right from a 1928 Oregonian paper.  The label inside the furniture reads "Built by John since 1891".  I think I remember my great aunt telling me that it was rosewood furniture.  I am at a loss as to how to determine a value for this set and I would appreciate any direction you could give me.  I don't want to sell it for $250 at a yard sale if it's worth a lot more, but I'm clueless, and need direction.  Thank you for any help you can provide.

Answer
Hi Barbera
Nice to hear from you.
Don't want to depress you Barbara but this type of veneered furniture has little value.
If you could get $250.00 for it I would take it.
It would have been made in 1928 obviously if you found the paper in the back of the mirror.
Now having said that, a lot of this Depression era furniture was well made compared to todays stuff.
And there is very slowly (in Canada) a few folks wanting to acquire it.
This piece looks in overall good condition (hope you have the missing knob) and perhaps if you advertised the set correctly you could sell it for a bit more.
Don't advertise it as rosewood though.
Good Luck
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
