Question

sleigh
We purchased a lovely 2 person cutter sleigh circa 1890.  The wood (probably pine) is very weathered, almost black with just a tiny remnant of paint.  We have put two coats of boiled linseed oil/turpentine on it.  We are divided on whether to paint it or leave it as is.  We plan to have it outside 4 to 6 weeks at Christmas so it will be in snow and rain.  We want to preserve it but we don't want to diminish its antique value.  No doubt it originally had paint.  What do you think we should do?

Answer
Hi Vicki
Nice to hear from you.
Don't even think about painting these lovely sleighs.
If they will only be outdoors 4 to 6 weeks a year the oil, while not a great sealant should be enough to keep the moisture out for that length of time.
I would oil each year.
Put some blocks under the runners while in storage and also outdoors to keep them off the ground and garage floor.
Kind Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
