Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Lane Cedar Chest

Question
I have been given my Mother's Lane cedar chest, style 2968 serial #350121. 1950's. The top is a blonde color. It is chipped and worn. I don't know if this is a laminate covering. How would I go about restoring it.

Answer
Hi Kim
Nice to hear from you.
Your chest is likely veneer.
Sounds like a good candidate for a complete stripping and refinish.
After that is done and before any finish is applied, you can fill the chipped areas with wood filler and sand them.
And as long as the veneer is firmly attached, stripping it is no different than stripping solid wood.
And these lovely old chests refinish beautifully. It would be a great first project if you have never done this work before.
If you need help along the way just ask.
Kind Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
