Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Spray paint on an old dresser

Question
I have this dresser that I got from my in laws and it had been spray painted black. Just spray paint, no other finishing. They had gotten it like this, so they don't know what the finish is under it.(veneer or just a poly) I want to remove the spray paint without damaging what's under there. It's solid wood, nice deco lines to it, really an interesting piece. Is there a way to just remove the spray paint?

Answer
Hi Tessa
Nice to hear from you.
Black paint is the worse darn stuff to remove because of the mess.
But if your determined you can do it.
I think you may be a bit confused on the finish.
Veneer is actually wood, not a finish. Its very thin wood that is applied over solid wood. It strips exactly the same as solid wood. A lot of folks think it will be damaged when its stripped but thats not the case.
A lot of this old deco furniture was veneer and it strips beautifully I assure you.
To remove this black spray paint you will need an MC stripper.
Not sure if you need the full stripping info but just ask if you do.
Kind Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
