Question

marks on back
Hi Martin,

I was cleaning out a 1700's house. I found a pewter charger behind a board near the fire place. It is 15 inches across with the inscription on the front rim stamped reading "PLAT PLATSIRE DONNEPAR M CATELLE" carved into the rim is 1801. On the back it has the standard crowned rose but it also has  MB in the band of the crown. Next to that mark is a castle with the letters M on one side and B on the other. Any idea who made this? Or what value it may have?

Hello Nick,

I wish I could find pewter hidden in the house - mostly I have to pay for the pieces I have!

The marks appear to be typical of the Low Countries, possibly Belgium, and are consistent with a date around 1800, though I cannot assign a maker, as Continental European pewter is not really my field. The inscription is opaque to me, except that "plat" presumably is "plate", and M Catelle is probably the owner's name.

Decorated and/or inscribed plates from the Low Countries from the late 18th and early 19th Centuries are quite commonly seen.

Value if in excellent condition, and assuming the inscription is innocuous, will be around 30-60 pounds / 60-120 dollars. More if the inscription suggests an important association.

Hope that helps.
