Question
I saw your response to someone about a thimble marked M.T. Pat'D with the thread cutter on the side.  In side the thread cutter which slides up is another little "thing" that slides.  Can you tell me more about the thread cutter and how it works?  Thanks

Answer
Hello Biddy,
There are many types of gadget thimbles and also different thread cutters. If you have one of these thimbles, are you able to post a photo so that I can be more specific in my response?
If not and without seeing your thimble I suspect that what you might have is a dual purpose gadget thimble.
The blade is the thread cutter and you might also have a thin 'wire' loop that goes up and down.
If this is correct then that part of the gadget thimble is used to thread a needle.  The thin wire loop is pushed through the eye of the needle and the thread goes through the wire loop. The loop is pulled through the eye of the needle, threading it.
I hope this helps.
Irene

Expertise

I have been a collector of antique sewing tools and thimbles for over 30 years. I am also a dealer in this field and sell on eBay under the name -- serengeti2. I am NOT, and I repeat NOT an expert on antique or vintage domestic household sewing machines used for everyday home sewing. I can offer help when it comes to TOY or miniature collectible sewing machines ONLY.
