Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Antique twin beds

Question
At Round Top Texas, I purchased two carved maple twin beds that I believe are from the 19th century.  Each bed consists of a head board, a footboard, two wooden side rails with wooden pegs, and 2 long old screws (I think I need to purchase more screws to equal 4 per bed).  My question:  there are no slats, and I am unsure how the people who owned them kept the mattresses on securely.  Also, the width is slightly narrower than beds made today.  I am planning to buy L-brackets, but am unsure about lack of slats.
Thank you!

Answer
Hi Dawnelle
Nice to hear from you.
Just so I'm clear here..do you know if you can get proper fitting matresses for these beds?
Any of these old beds I have seen needed a spring. The slats supported this spring. Do you have the springs? You cannot set the matress on top of the slats even if you had them.
Get back to me please so we can figure out what to do LOL

Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
