Collectibles-General (Antiques) - Fairbanks antique scale

Expert: Bill & Jan Berning - 10/21/2009

Question
I have an old Fairbanks antique platform scale that my grandfather used to weigh cattle on. It has been left outside & all of the wood has rotted off. I don't have any pictures of it. I was wondering if you can tell me where to find a picture of it or send me one, so I can rebuild it. Attached is a picture of all the parts of it.

Answer
Hi Timmy,

Your scale is a Short Iron Pillar Beam Outfit. These were available with a single or double beam and as in the floor or above the floor type scales. The illustrations attached are from Fairbanks' 1906 catalog. The left illustration shows the pillars and a single beam scale like your double beam version. The other 3 illustrations show how the base of your scale may have looked.

Hope this helps.
