Question I recently purchased an old Lane Cedar Chest at an estate sale for $6! The interior is in great shape and includes 2 boxed shelves when it is opened, attached under the lid. The exterior was covered with some type of veneer but most of it has come off to reveal the cedar underneath. I'm not familiar with antiques. My plan was to cover the lid with padding/fabric to make a seat (it has water damage) and then paint the rest of the exterior. I just need to know if I am crazy to do this or if I should try to restore the natural cedar. I don't want to ruin an antique! Thanks for any advice!
Answer Hi Casie
Nice to hear from you.
First of all you must determine if the lock on your chest is a recall.
Please read this
http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml00/00084.html
Next you can determine the date here
http://www.ehow.com/how_4830084_date-lane-cedar-chest.html
But a chest in this condition has no value so do not hesitate to do what you like with it.
I like your idea and it would be a very useful piece when finished.
But check the lock. Remove it if you cannot determine if its a recall.
Kind Regards
Eileen
