Question
I have a Mason Davis and Co./ Chicago Scale Co. 500 lb.. side arm platform scale that has steel wheels and sets on the floor. It has very good paint and the color is blue and black with gold pin stripe decorating on it. I don't know if this is the original color and paint or if it has been repainted. The only number marking I could find (No 13694) is on the balance beam. What is this scales value?
Answer Hi Brad,
Chicago Scale Co was in business from 1863 through the early 1900s. Since we do not have any catalogs available containing your scale it is impossible to determine the exact date of manufacture. Mason, Davis Stove Co. bought Chicago sometime in the early 1900s.
Unfortunately the only patents we can find assigned to Mason and Davis Company are not for this platform scale. The company apparently was in the scale business from at least 1915 to 1924 as is evident by the three patents assigned to them. Two of those are for Army/Navy scales.
It is very uncommon to find scales like yours with such excellent original paint and decals. The ornate brace adds to the retail value which might be $125-$200.
Hope this helps.
