Question QUESTION: I was given this desk and was wondering if you could tell me what the value might be. I don't know if it was refinished or not.
IMAGE: desk
ANSWER: b&g is one of the more successful companies and did so with quality merchandise. the desk has been refinished and although the surface looks good and it is a good job more skillful coloring would have made a more elegant look. the woods are mahogany, sweet gum and walnut and the repair was not done so well.
even so, it is a great desk!!
retail in a shop it would be priced at 400.

QUESTION: My wife found this table at a flea market, she paid 100.00 for it. Can you tell me anything about the value of it.
Answer this is a victorian parlor table or lamp table, the wood is walnut and the veneered panels are burl walnut, it was made around 1880.
if i had seen it for 100 there would been no hesitation to buy it. i then would have repaired and finished it and put a price of 650 on it retail. as is in a shop it would sell for 350-450 depending on the shop.
you need to send her on more shopping trips!!!
a good waxing with briwax paste wax in a dark brown color will do wonders for the table, and do not glue the loose part with white, yellow, gorilla, or contact type glues, use only hide glue.
