Collectibles-General (Antiques) - Berkel Fan-top computing scale

Expert: Bill & Jan Berning - 11/7/2009

Question
Hi Bill and Jan,
I have a Berkel Detecto-Gram fan-top computing scale.  It will measure 0-5 lbs, and has a second platform (would this be for couterweight to accommodate going over 5 lbs?)  The indicator arm is labelled from 1 to 70c per lb.  The scale has a white enamel finish, serial number 50553.  Would you have any idea as to its age and value?

Answer
Hi Mark,

You can find early history of Berkel at the following website:
http://www.wtxweb.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=29&Itemid=87

Your scale is shown on a 1953 Jacobs Brothers Detecto scale flier. It is described as follows: "Detecto-Gram Computing Scale. Large, clear and easy to read dial face. No sqinting......No figuring. AUTOMATIC COMPUTING CHART. No figuring to do...selling prices are easy to read. GUNSIGHT wire shows correct computed price. TARGET pointer clearly indicates correct weight. QUICK-STOP device stops swing of pointer instantly. Saves you time--helps you wait on more customers.

EVEN BALANCE CONSTRUCTION. Special processed jewel-finish bearings, hardened steel knife-edged pivots give Detecto-Gram hairline accuracy and sensitivity.

COMPACT CONSTRUCTION. Takes less that eleven (11) inches of counter space.

COMMODITY PLATES. Choice of flat plate, deep scoop, or fish pan.

5 lb. model--shows 38 prices from 6 1/4 to .70c per lb.
      (also available--38 prices from 3c to 60c)
No. 2C10--Has 2 lb. dial, computing chart and porcelain-on-steel platter as illustrated. Used for dairy products, delicatessen, groceries, etc.
No. 5C10--Same as 2C10, but with 5 lb. dial and computing chart.

Large fan scale specifications
Model nos. 2C10, 2C10 1/2, 2C15, 5C10, 5C10 1/2, 5C15.
Size 26" H. x 20" L. x 10 3/4"W.
Capacity up to 30 lbs.
(2 lb. dial shows every 1/4 oz., 5 lb. dial shows every 1 oz.)"

Some similar scales are shown with two 2 lb. weights but it says nothing about their use. We assume, since we have never played with a scale like this, that the user or shop keeper would use the extra weights to increase the capacity of the scale.  Berkel might have sold the scale for Detecto/Jacobs or serviced it and added their name.

Retail value might be $25-$150.

Hope this helps.
