Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Care of wicker casket

Question
Having just purchased a wicker viewing casket from the late 1800's I am concerned about caring for it properly. It has retained shape and has no breaks, but is flaking a brown coating from the wicker.  Perhaps varnish?  Can I apply anything to add elasticity?

Answer
Thanks for your question,
The flaking material is probably the old varnish as you said.I would use a soft brush and go over it to remove as much of the flaking material as possible, then I would apply a coat of varnish or poly ,thinned with the thinner uesd for what you buy, to about 50/50. The reason to thin it is so it will flow into the weave easier and seal it up. Also being thinner, it won't dry as stiff and leave the wicker flexible. It may darken it some so try it on a out of the way spot first.
Good Luck with your project,
 Rob
