Question
Can you tell me if this is a desk? I do remember that this "desk" was at the church when I was a child and my Mother bought the "desk" from the church. I also remember that the "desk" was black in color and Mom striped it. Also she did not like the mirror and replaced it. What time period was this made. I would like to know more about this "desk" and I am hoping you can tell me.
Thanks,
Lisa Wrencher
Answer it is a secretary bookcase from around 1910-20. the alterations done hurt the resale value but these are great pieces, this is oak wood. these were made in large numbers and in hundreds of styles. if the mirror were original and the piece was in perfect condition it would sell for 1200.
the face of the desk part would have had veneer on it that appears to have been removed, are there pigeon holes or cubby holes behind the fall front?
