Collectibles-General (Antiques) - Duncan Phyfe Sofa, unknown age.

Question
Hello. I found a Duncan Phyfe 'style' sofa at a local Goodwill. I don't know if it's truly a Duncan Phyfe or just a replica. I know that it does have real brass claw feet. Would you be able to tell me if it is a Ducan Phyfe and what time frame. Thanks, Amanda

Answer
It is from the 1940s.  i cannot identify the wood from the pictures, some are mahogany, most of this vintage are either mahogany, birch, sweet gum, or tulip poplar; all stained with a water based dye to a red color.

the style is referred to as duncan phyfe.  these are plentiful at a wide range of prices fron 100 to 1000 depending on where purchased and condition.

the one pictures should be priced around 250.  the wood needs refinishing and of course it should be recovered.  to refresh the wood would be easy but if it is to be recovered then at that time the wood should be refinished and any gluing of the frame done at that time (while it is a naked frame).  total cost would be 800 to refinish the frame and depending on the fabric chosen 800-1200 to recover.

it would be a nice looking sofa done right.  there are a lot of very nice characteristics in this form and style.
