About Eileen Cronk
Expertise
I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience
I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.

Collectibles-General (Antiques) - RE: Macey Bookcase

Expert: Eileen Cronk - 11/7/2009

Question
I was wondering if you could help me understand the best way to clean an oak bookcase from Macey.  It has four cases and a top but no base.  It shows Macey 98 on the back of each case and under the top of the case it has a faint stamp  ' B A N E L S ' 07 27 1916  The Macey Co.'.  The B is very faint and could be an R.  It also has the word Macey written in cursive in pencil with some of the dimensions of the original board with "#989 and 1/4 Oak" also written in pencil.  I can send some pictures if you like but I had started cleaning it up and now I want to make sure I don't do anything that would harm the wood. What would be the best cleaner for the wood and also the metal on this case?  I do appreciate this very much!  I am very much a novice.

I am in College Station, Texas.

Cheers!

Answer
Hi Anne
Nice to hear from you.
If the bookcase is really grimy (you can scrape crud off with a fingernail), then I use mineral spirits and a rag.
If this fails to remove the dirt then I switch from the rag to a fine steel wool pad dipped in the spirits. This will remove any and all dirt on furniture..and metal.
So you will have to judge if the case is that dirty.
If its not and you just want to freshen it, good old soap and water with drying as you work.
Follow both methods with a nice waxing.
Great question
Regards
Eileen
