Collectibles-General (Antiques)/antique wash basin cabinet?

Question
Hi, I have a wood cabinet that has a marble top w/ a large marble back on it.  The back has two rounded marble shelves attached to it.  There is one drawer and two cabinet doors.  The joinery on the side of the drawer is with dowels.  The pulls on the drawer are wood also.  There is an inscription in the drawer of K & G with a chair and also what looks like Pat.May8.70.  Would you be able to tell me anything about this piece?  It has been painted brown and we were going to probably just repaint it the same color.  Should it be painted or stained?

Answer
Hi Sherry
Nice to hear from you.
What you are describing to me is a marble topped wash stand.
Is yours similar to this one?

The drawer joinery you describe as being dowels is actually called "Knapps joinery".
Your washstand was made between 1871 and 1900 if it has Knapps Joinery.
Sherry that puts your washstand in the "antique" class (over 100 years old).
Personally I like to get rid of the paint but if its already painted there is no harm in another coat.
But consider stripping the paint if you have the time.
If you need the stripping info just ask.
Kind Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
