Question
Hello, I hope you can help me, I have been told that the best way to repaint this type of furniture, is to strip it down.  I don't know the first thing about it.  This is a baked on paint from what I have been told. Would you have any ideas of what to use that would be the best to do with this.  I would like to possibly fix into a black paint that would clean it up and not see that it is this very dirty looking cream color white.  I would appreicate any advice you may have.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Heather
Nice to hear from you.
You have been told incorrectly.
You never need to strip painted furniture to paint it.
All you need to do is prep the surface so your new paint will adhere properly.
You prep by sanding with 120 grit sandpaper.
Just a light scuffing is all thats necessary. You do not need to sand aggressivly.
I like your idea of painting black.
Two coats are all thats will be necessary with black. No need for primer.
I am very familiar with the type of paint that is on your dresser.
Great question

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
