Question
can you tell me anything about this chair, I picked it up at a yard sale.
Answer it is an empire revival rocker in birch wood that was originally stained with water based dye to a dark red cordovan color. these were manufactured in the 1920s and sell for 75-100 in the condition shown in the picture.
if you decide to refinish it the value will increase IF DONE PROPERLY. do not sand the color of coating off. strip with a chemical stripper, or if you have never done this before, take it to someone wha knows what they are doing. strip, do all repairs, gently wipe with 220 sandpaper, then stain with a dye stain not a pigmented stain and coat it with shellac, several coats rubbing smooth between costs with 320 no fil paper, rub the last coat the rub with #0000 steel wool the wax it and you are done. or--take it to a pro and spend the 250-350 to have the wood done then to the upholsterer. if you dont know who to take it to tell me whaere you are an perhaps i can recommend someone skilled and competent.
