Collectibles-General (Antiques) - refinish paper wicker chair

Expert: Anderson's Restorations-Rob Anderson - 11/2/2009

Question
Hello,
I would like to refinish my grandmother's wicker armchair.  I think that it is paper wicker-fibers look twisted and there is an inner core with wire.  It has many layers of old paint that have cracked and fallen off, in places.  Can I use paint stripper on the paper fiber wicker without damage to the wicker?  I simply want to repaint it, but there is quite a build-up of old paint and want to use the best remediation method possible to do honor to this great old chair!  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Thanks for your question,
You cannot use stripper, water or any liquid on paper wicker. It will end up as a big lump of goo.The best way to remove the paint is very time consuming and that's just picking it off with an awl or similar tool. You have to be careful also not to chip off the paper.A soft brass brush may help to remove any loose paint too.
Work with fibre wicker is a slow process but if you stick to it, you can end up with a nice piece that will last for many more years.
 Good Luck,
  Rob
