Question

Walker & Hall Cutlery
Hi,
I have some Walker & Hall forks and spoons that don't have the normal hallmarks that I have seen on other British cutlery. They all have the company name W&H in a triangle flag on the back of them to confirm they are made by Walker & Hall.  But instead of a Crown, date letter and silver content marking they have a picture of a old 3 story building with 4 chimneys and 3 crosses on top of each gable.  Have you seen this before or know anything about the building in the picture and if they were made in Sheffield. Thank you

Hello Noelene,

This variation of a Walker & Hall mark was registered by them as a trademark in September 1883, though it may have been in use earlier. The registration indicates the mark is for use on silver, electroplated and Britannia metal goods. Your cutlery is perhaps most likely be electroplate. If it were silver, it would have to have the usual British hallmarks, along with this mark. So far as I am aware, all Walker & Hall's products were made in Sheffield.

The information about the registration of this trademark comes from the Pewter Society database. We have a sketch of this mark, but no photograph. Your photo is excellent, and I wondered if you would mind if I added it to our database to help other collectors in the future?

Hope that helps.
