Question

Thimble top design
Hi Irene,

You were helping me with a Germany stamped thimble. You stated that it is Gilded. Here is the  design on top of the thimble. (9 petals) Can you tell me who manufactured it, if it is gold gilding, and what it would be worth? Photos attached.

Thank you,
Mayme

Answer
Hi Mayme,
Your thimble was most likely made by Soergel & Stollmeyer.
Gilding = a base metal that is coated with a very, very thin layer of gold.
Just to be sure though that your thimble is gilded rather than it being just a bright brass ...... please rub your thumb over the metal numerous times and then smell your thumb.  If it is brass you will smell that typical brass odor associated with this metal.
If the thimble is is excellent condition, the bottom rim in-round and there are no holes, I would estimate a value of around $20.  Again, the thimble is not of great value as these were mass produced.
I hope this helps.
Irene
