Collectibles-General (Antiques)/6 drawer dresser

Question
I cam across a 6 drawer dresser.  Solid wood, it has been painted.  The back is stamped sea mist 881.  I am trying to find out who makes it, how old it is.  Is it worth stripping and refinishing?  Thanks for all your help.

Answer
Hi Lesley
Nice to hear from you.
Any old solid wood painted dresser is worth stripping in my opinion.
But I think your dresser may be a paint grade dresser and not so old.
The "sea mist 881" stamped on the back is the clue.
This is likely identifying the original finish.
Paint grade furniture does not strip well but it can certainly be repainted with great results.
There is no way I or anyone can tell you who made this dresser but if its strong and solid its well worth painting and keeping.
Older furniture from the 60's and 70's is much better made than today. And I'd choose it any day over new stuff.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
