Question

James Dixon & Sons tea
Hi Mr. Roberts, I purchased several old James Dixon teapots last year, most either said pewter or looked like pewter.  I have one that looks a different color, but I've looked online and can't find how to tell by the numbers if it is silverplate or pewter.  I am guessing silverplate.  The bottom has a number 4, then James Dixon & Sons, then below that 718 and 96.  I'm assuming from what I've read that "718" is the pattern number and "96" refers to the person making it.  Does the "4" imply what material it's made from?  I am planning on selling this and do not want to write the wrong desription.  Thanks so much for any help you can offer.

Hello Michelle,

Sorry to be slow replying.

From the photo it seems there is some plating that is showing losses in a few places, so yes, it is plated, and therefore most likely silver plate. There is no way to consistently distinguish plated and non-plated pieces from the marks. You are right about 718 and 96, and 4 will most likely be the capacity in Imperial half-pints.

Hope that helps.
