Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Old tan looking dresser with stain on it

Question
Hi there. I have a bedroom set given to me by my grandmother. I placed a plastic bag on top of the dresser and it must have been a damp bag because the red lettering from the bag bled through the top of the dresser. I have no clue what type of wood the set is, but it is almost a tan color and I suspect it is a set from the 1940's. What do I do? Do you need a photo?

Answer
Hi Amy
Nice to hear from you.
I don't need a picture. You said it all LOL.
I have had this happen on my arborite counter top.
The culprit was a plastic bread bag.
I solved my problem with Javex but I don't want you to use that on your dresser.
Use a fine steel wool pad dipped in mineral spirits.
Just a gentle rub with the grain should remove this.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
