Hoping you can help me. I have a very old set of silver sewing implements, in a case I refer to as cathedral shaped. Research makes me think it's from France. I wonder if you can give me confirmation that it's French, estimate age, etc. The bobbin is missing. Everything seems in excellent condition. I believe the thimble is not part of the set, but old. I'm quite sure I can make out a boar's head on the thimble, but there's another mark of some sort, near the boar's head, that I can't make out -- a thistle branch maybe?? There's a mark of some sort on the stiletto, but I can't tell what it is -- and it appears I can only upload one picture here, so unless you can provide me with a way to send more, this overall picture will have to do.

Hello Marcy. Your sewing set is gorgeous! With the pieces being marked with a boars head, they are most definitely French. The problem with French marks is they are so very tiny and so many of them are similar that is it very hard to identify them for sure. There are a number of good books out on silver marks Tardy or Jackson are once that you ought to be able to find without much trouble. Since the French marks will indicate the age, I wouldn't begin to guess as to when the pieces might have been made. I've had the same trouble trying to read specific marks on French thimbles.
