Collectibles-General (Antiques)/cleaning a blanket chest

Question
I have recently purchased 1700 to 1800s blanket chest. It was obviously kept outside somewhere and has bird droppings on the side and some on the front. I want to remove them but not disturb the red finish. Any suggestions

Answer
Hi Catherine
Nice to hear from you.
Good old soap and water after you have brushed as much of the bird poop off as you can.
Don't really saturate the wood. You want your cloth about as wet as if you were wiping down your counter top after lunch (being a woman I know you can relate to the technique LOL).
I would really hesitate to use anything stronger than your dish soap so lets hope this works for you.
Kind Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
