Collectibles-General (Antiques) - Antique Cotton Gin Scale

Expert: Bill & Jan Berning - 5/30/2009

Question
Have an antique cotton gin scale in seemingly mint condition. The writings on the scale are "Mc Donald Pitless U.S. Standard Manufactured by Moline Plow Co. Scale Division Stoughton Wis. 29187 14" Any information you can give me about this scale and it's value would
be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Debora,
Info on the McDonald Pitless Scale Co can be found in a 1908 history of Cass County, MO located here:
http://books.google.com/books?id=7n8UAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA215&dq=McDonald+Pitless&lr=
More info may be found here: http://books.google.com/books?id=JWie7ATaoc0C&pg=PA97&dq=McDonald+Pitless&lr=#PP... .
The McDonald Brothers bought the Pleasant Hill Foundry in December of 1900, the plant burned on July 4, 1907 but was rebuilt 3 months later. It was sold to the Moline Plow Co. in December of 1911 and thereafter moved to Stoughton, Wisconsin.

A time line of Moline Plow Co may be found here: http://www.google.com/search?q=Moline+Plow+Co+history&hl=en&rlz=1B3RNFA_enUS278U... .

Your scale dates after 1911.

If you send a photo to us at i-weigh-u@comcast.net we will be able to better evaluate your scale as to value.

Thanks.

Weigh Daily!!!
