Question I have a roll top desk in which the roll top has partially caved in when the top was closed. I pulled the top up enough to get my hand in and I am able to push the slants up some, but they won't catch in the slot they should slide in. I don't want to ruin it any further and was hoping you could give me some direction in repairing this issue. I am pretty handy with my hands but have never done this before. If you could help or point me to someone who could it would be a great help as this desk was a gift from my wife.
Thank you,
Richard Dickson
Answer hello Richard
well, if you are in Mass or southern NH come to my shop otherwise. I will try to help you with the desk my email is bobwiley1@verizon.net
first you will have to remove the sides, they are either resting on pegs or are screwed on from the bottom of the writing surface of the desk,
then you can remove the tambour top (that's the part that rolls
you will see that the slats are held together with cloth, usually canvas or burlap
you might have to remove the slats from the cloth and replace it
when you put the desk back together lay it on the side, otherwise it will be like shooting pool with a rope
feel free to contact me at the above email if you have any other questions
good luck
