Collectibles-General (Antiques) - Globe Wernicke Roll Top Desk

Expert: Fred Taylor - 6/26/2009

Question
Hi there - I've got an "S" curve roll top desk and chair (with original casters) that my folks bought about 30 years ago for upwards of $900. Sadly, at this point it is too much for our home and I'm trying to figure out a fair selling price. I'm in the midwest and it appears that Oak antiques are a dime a dozen - please advise! I'll be emailing you photos soon...

Answer
Rachel - The bloom is off the roll top desk flower in the North American market. Ten or fifteen years ago a good 72" oak roll top, no matter the maker, brought $1500-$2000 at auction. Today they sell in the $400-$500 range. Yours is a nice piece and would sell in that range.

Here are some comparabnle desks with sale price and date.
