About Eileen Cronk
Expertise
I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience
I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.

Collectibles-General (Antiques) - ice cream maker

Expert: Eileen Cronk - 6/30/2009

Question
Hi!  I just read one of your replies regarding cleaning the wooden part of an old ice cream freezer.  My husband and I purchased an old ice cream maker which says "New Zee Zee 35" on the metal top.  It is rusted and dirty, but the freezer inside is pretty good minus a few rust spots.  My question is, would this freezer be food safe to make ice cream in and what would be some suggestions to further clean it.  I have used steel wool on it.

Thank you,
Angie

Answer
Hi Angie
Nice to hear from you.
The steel wool is a good idea but you can use 120 grit sandpaper to go over the rust spots to make sure its all removed.
Other than that, good old soap and water.
I see no reason why you can't give the machine a try.
You'll likely only want to do it once as a novelty.
But the home made ice cream is so good you'll likely want to invest in an electric one (but they still make replicas of yours).
Great Question
Regards
Eileen
