Collectibles-General (Antiques) - Dayton Candy/ Nut Scale

Expert: Bill & Jan Berning - 7/7/2009

Question
Hi Bill and Jan! My name is Judy and I was wondering if you could help me out in getting information and value on a candy scale I have. It is a Dayton Scale made by Hobart Manufacturing Co. Troy Ohio, USA. It's a 3 lbs scale. The model number is 100 and the serial number I believe reads 1252429. I bought this scale a few years ago from a candy/nut store that was going out of business. They were located on the Wildwood, N.J. Boardwalk for many years. I was wondering how old this scale is and it's value. I have included a picture of it for you to see. (I have more pics if you need to see them). It is in very good shape. The pan does have some corrosion from the salt of the peanuts but it doesn't seem to have hurt it in anyway. If you could help me out I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you and have a great day.

Answer
Hi Judy,

We are sorry to have taken so long to answer your question.

Kenneth Allen & David Meeker of Troy, OH were issued patent number 2347803 on May 2, 1944 for a dash pot for a computing scale. It was assigned to Hobart. They were also issued patent number 2383404 on August 24, 1945 for your scale. It, too, was assigned to Hobart. Both of these patents were applied for on October 15, 1941. Patents may be viewed here: http://www.google.com/patents?hl=en , by entering their numbers one at a time. Meeker and Allen had many patents issued for computing scales, assigned to Hobart, from 1930s-1960s.

Retail value might be $75-$150.

Hope this helps.
