Collectibles-General (Antiques) - help with antique scale

Expert: Bill & Jan Berning - 7/7/2009

Question
Hello-
Got this scale at a thrift store. Brass.20 inches tall. Very heavy. Very Old. Marked "MD CV" on the round part of metal that is directly above the measuring pan. Measures up to 3 pounds. I have no idea what it measured or the value. Can you help?  Please note the counterweight is missing. Thanks
Angela

Answer
Hi Angela,

Unfortunately, your scale is a modern "replica" of a scale that as far as we know never existed. These scales started turning up in the mid-1970s and have little value to most antique scale collectors. Some people like them for decorative purposes. Retail value might be $20-$30.

Hope this helps.
