Question

pressed back chair
I RECENTLY GOT GIVEN THIS CHAIR WHICH I THINK IS OAK PRESSED BACK
BUT NEEDS REPAIR AND HAS VARNISH OVER OLD DIRT SO IS A BLACK COLOUR IN PLACES THEY HAVE FITTED A SEAT WHERE THE CANE SEAT WAS,
SHOULD I HAVE THIS REPAIRED AND CLEANED (BY A PROFESSIONAL) OR LEAVE IT AS IS, ALSO PLEASE COULD YOU DATE AND LOCATE THE ORIGIN FOR ME THE IS ALSO CARVED SIDES WHICH THE OTHER CHAIRS I HAVE SEEN ON THE INTERNET DO NOT HAVE
ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECTIATED
BEST REGARDS KATHY

Answer
If this were my chair, I would have it refinished and a new seat installed. The dark areas may not be dirt but stains in the wood. Some woods and especially oak, have a lot of acids that will react with other things and cause it to go "black". It's ok, just part of the age.
If you have it done by someone, please make sure of the process. I still can't belive over the years that "professionals" will strip off the patina and apply a high gloss finish and call it "restored".Ask to see some pics or sample pieces. Make sure they understand what "look" you are aiming for and have a new cane seat installed.
These chairs were made by the boatload around the turn of the century, 1880-1920. It looks like it could be a very nice side chair or the start of a set of pressbacks.
 Good Luck
