Question

old chairs
Hi. I am cleaning out my basement and came across a few old chairs that may have belonged to a grandparent. They probably date back to the 30's or 40's. I'm not sure. I'm trying to find out if they are worth anything before I just get rid of them. A label beneath the seat says "Blanchard & Gould Co." of Greenville New Hampshire. I can't find any info on this place or when they existed. Thought you might have some info. Thanks, Jackie

Answer
Hi Jackie
Nice to hear from you.
These old oak chairs are from a set of dining room chairs. Usually one of the set of 6 would have arms.
The chairs are from the early 1900"s.
Very common style and chair but certainly not something to junk.
Lots of folks seek out this particular style to complete a set because they are plain and can be grouped with many different styles of chairs.
I am in Canada and see these chairs sell for $75.00 to $100.00 each at auction.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
