Collectibles-General (Antiques)/veneer replacement

Question

Games table
I have inherited a games table with a rotating top, that my grandfather made. When the top is rotated it reveals four pockets for your drinks and poker chips.

The veneer on both sides of the top were so badly cracked that I have removed them. The bottom veneer had a split completely across the width, across the grain!

So, now that I have removed the veneer I would like to replace it with a similar veneer, but the surfaces are covered with the residue of the animal glue. How can I safely remove this residue?

When the veneer was removed the top warped (about 1/4 inch).
I intend to correct the warp by adding cleats to the bottom surface.

Answer
Hi Neil
Nice to hear from you.
With this type of floating table top you should replace the veneer on both sides or it will continue to warp despite the cleats.
Warm water or vinegar will remove animal glue but in this case its not necessary to remove every last trace of it and a lot of it can be sanded off.
This is a very nice table.
Good Luck

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
