Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Antique sewing rocker?

Question
I'm going on a mission trip next month and I'm doing fundraisers to raise money so a lady gave me an antique sewing rocker with a cane bottom, with a high back and one of the rockers is slanted at a different angle than the other one. It sits really low with no arms. Do you know what this is called and is it a true sewing rocker? I'm having a yard sale this Saturday and I would like to have a little knowledge on what the item truly is.

Thank You
Sharon

Answer
Hi Sharon
Nice to hear from you.
I am in Canada and we always called these rockers "Nursing Rockers".
Mother sat and rocked and nursed her baby in the rocker.
These chairs are often referred to as sewing rockers too and some sewing rockers have a drawer underneath where Mother stored thread and needles.
I am baffled at your description of one rocker having a different slant than the other.
The only way this could happen is through excessive wear as rockers are not made this way.
Hope this helps
Good luck with the fund raising.

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
