Question
I was given a rocking chair recently and I thought it was wicker.  It is very very old it belonged to an old women about 80 or so who got it from her mother.  When I started to scrape some of the old paint off to repaint it I noticed it was not wicker at all! it looks like paper fibers or roap twisted very tightly to look like wicker?  Can you tell anything about this and how to restore it?

Answer
This rocker is made out of Fibre which is a twisted paper that made the Lloyd Loom furniture famous. You cannot use any strippers or the like as you will end up with a wet paper bag looking pile of goop.About the only thing you can do if you have the patience, is to use an assortment of brushes and lightly remove any loose or flaking paint, then repaint.Look carefully to see if you can find a tag or label under the paint.
Thanks for your question,
