Collectibles-General (Antiques) - Tennessee Gooseneck Rocker?

Expert: robert klein - 9/1/2009

Question
I picked up this gooseneck platform rocker at a yard sale recently.  It is very comfortable and I am considering reupholstering it.  I would love some information about it.  I can't find any markings except on the hinges underneath which read SENG Chicago.  The only chair I could find on-line that resembled it was called a Tennessee Gooseneck rocker.  Is that what it is?  Any idea of it's origin or value?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
hi this is from the 1940s but without a label there is no way to determine the origin, there were tens of thousands of manufacturers in operation.  the wood should be birch, sweet gum, or tulip poplar stained with a water base dye to the red mahogany color used at that time.

as is the retail price in a shop would be 200.  these are great chairs and very comfortable.  a similar platform rocker like this new would be costly so go ahead and have it done right, upholstery and refinishing. it will only enhance the value not diminish it.

the company started in 1874 and went through several stages of development, the last reference i find is 1954.
