Question
I have a number 8 Worlds Columbian Exposition 1892 Thimble in mint condition. It has the words: "Worlds Columbian Expostition 1892" and the number 8 just to the left of the "W" There is a decorative band around the base. Can you tell me what would be a safe way to clean it as not to damage the finish? I would also like to know the value of it if possible. Thank You!
AnswerHello Nancy. Your thimble was issued by Simons Bros. Co. of Philadelphia PA. They still make thimbles to this day. The 8 indicates the size of the thimble. The decorative band around the base is known as a chased rim. Conservators will tell you not to clean the patina (tarnish) on the item, but you can clean it with a very soft bristle brush, mild soap and water. Be sure to dry it very well. I like my thimbles to shine, so I use a product called Simichrome. It can be found on line and in many antique shops. Under NO circumstances should you ever use products like TARNEX. The price guide for American Silver Thimbles by Gay Ann Rogers indicates the value of this thimble to be $150-$250. Since your picture is not clear enough for me to see if the band pattern is crisp or worn, I cannot tell if the thimble is considered mint or not. Normally mint indicates unused. Pin holes or scratches from use, or being out of shape, will detract from the value. Thimble prices have decreased over the past couple of years. I have seen this thimble sell for as little as $50, but I think $100-$125 is a more reasonable current day value. Enjoy your thimble! Barbara
