Question
I recently aquired a larkin desk that is painted black, and in need of repair. The desk top folds down and it has 4 drawers. The drawer pulls have been replaced and some of the key locks are missing . I want to re-store it buy re-painting pin striping ,and stenciling. My question is is it of value as is,or should I go ahead and decorate it.P.S. I used to work at Ethan Allen in the decorated furniture dept.,so I know what I'm doing

Answer
Hi Karen
Nice to hear from you.
Go ahead with your restoration. How lucky you are to have the skills to do this.
The desk in this condition has little value.
You will greatly enhance the value with proper repairs.
Sure would be great to see a before and after.
Kind Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
