Collectibles-General (Antiques) - musty smell

Expert: Anderson's Restorations-Rob Anderson - 9/24/2009

Question
HI, I recently purchased a Hubley cast iron dog doorstop through ebay.  The dog has quite a musty smell.  Can you suggest a way to get rid of the smell. Thanks.

Answer
Cast Iron won't usually get an odor to it. I would suspect it may have been packed with something or it came from a smokers home. I would place it in the sun for a few hours to see if the heat will draw out the odor. You can wipe with clean rags every so often to remove any material.Aside from that, the only other thing would be to put a coat of paste wax on the doorstop to sort of seal it in. The wax can be removed safely without damage to the item.
 Thanks for your question,
  Rob
