Collectibles-General (Antiques)/wicker rocker care

Question
Hi...I purchased a Victorian style rocker with the thought of placing a plant on the seat in my solarium. At the top, the wicker is faded and very dry...a bit of splitting. Would it help to prolong its demise if I put an oil of some type on the chair. It is to fragile to sit on but want it for decorative purposes. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Gail
Nice to hear from you.
Yes it would prolong the demise of the chair if it has a protective finish of some kind applied.
If this is unpainted wicker, an oil would be fine. Perhaps tung oil applied with a brush.
If there is old paint present the oil will yellow the paint.
In that case a spray with water based poly might prolong the demise.
Great question.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
