Question
QUESTION: I have a Bally E-2000 slot machine, E-2090-37 305, that is malfunctioning.  In short, it will accept a coin and spin the reels but does not pay out.  The MPU is an E-2000 but the coin hopper is an E-1000.  I check the wire on the plug to make sure it was in the right position.  I can not put the machine in the test mode.  I have checked PS voltages and the test switch on the hopper board.  I can move this coin hopper to another machine and it works properly, test mode, etc.  I get a 50 000 code on the LED with door open but no other code.  There are other problems with the machine but I need to get past this one first.  Any suggestions as to where to start.

ANSWER: Hi David,

You know David, this could be a whole bunch of possible different problems, and even more solutions then I have time to give, and here is the wrong place to try as sometimes typing in answers here on the allexperts site, (the answer page) the site will flip back to the question page, and when I back my browser back to the answer page, it has all gone away, and I have to do it all over again. I have had to do this several times before and I am not a typer, but a hunt and peck guy on the key board. My first question to you would be, did this machine ever work, I mean did you see it working and played it? As right now I am wondering if you have E-1000 series and E-2000 series parts mixed up, as they are different! If your MPU has a Piggy back board on it where the battery is mounted, it has a E-1000 MPU board in it, if the battey is soldered right to the MPU without a Piggy back board, then it's a E-2000 series MPU. Yes they did make some early E models stamped as being E-2000 series, out of E-1000 parts just to use up the e-1000 parts stock. If you know this machine was working, then if nothing has changed you know you have the right parts in it. Here is just one problem switching parts can cause, if you put E-2000 reel readers which are 5 volt inferred emitters and detectors, into a E-1000 machine which uses 50 volt reel readers which use lights and receivers in it, well there goes three good reel reader boards. So, first make sure your working with the right stuff, there are Bally E-1000 and E-2000 series manuals should you not have any, which will show you the difference at:
http://jackpot7.freeyellow.com/page21.html
You say it spins the reels, but do they stop? all three or just one or two, it all makes a difference. If you have no history of this machine it could even have the wrong M1, M2, M3 programs in it and not be able to reed the reels. Your LED is working so this tells me that your power supply is probably just fine, if your LED was not working then there would be a problem with the power supply, but you say you get a open door code 50, so that is working. You say the hopper is good because it was tested in a e-2000 machine, that is finn and good unless the machine your working on requires a E-1000 hopper and not a E-2 hopper, the hopper boards are different between the two. E-1000 hoper boards can have the triacts blow-en out easily, and they are obsolete, you can't buy new ones. So, maybe it's possible someone tried a E-2000 hoper board in your e-1000 machine and left it, it will not work. I hear you can switch these two boards but you have to change the hopper board wiring. So many things here that we have to know first about this machine, before you even start to figure out what the problem could be. If you want to work on some of this information and get back to me, I'll be here OK David?

Thank You
Sincerely

QUESTION: Roger,

I bought two machines and was told they machine were working.  I did not have a chance to test them and the seller has moved out of town.  I have the FO-650-12 manual and the Fey manual.  I have some electronics knowledge as I am an amateur radio operator and build and repair radios.  I got one of the machines working by replacing a photo transistor in one reel reader.

First of all this machine has an E-2000 MPU (AS 2978-7), E-2000 reel readers with LED's, E-1000 coin hopper board, E-2000 delay relay, and no sound board only a buzzer and bell.  The short story is the machine will accept a coin, spin the reels, and all three reels will stop.  When a winning combination come up, it does not pay out.  The hopper motor does not run.  Also the bell and/or buzzer do not sound.  The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd coin pay lines on the upper glass light up as you deposit coins but not the ones next to the reels.  Although I don't know if they are supposed to.

The other machine, the working one, is basically a E-1000 machine.  I can put the coin hopper from the nonworking machine in the working one and the hopper will work or at least the motor runs.  I can put that machine into the test mode by pushing the test switch on this hopper board.

Looking at the wiring diagram, I don't see why I can't put the reel assembly from the the nonworking machine (E-2000 MPU) into the working machine (E-1000 MPU) to test it.  The reel reader board is powered by the same 50VAC line.  Or is there something I have missed?

The short story is I don't know where to start trouble shooting unless I can get it into the test mode which I can't.

Would it be more convenient to carry on this conversation directly through your own email address?

David

Answer
So David, you have a good working E-1000 machine, one done. The other machine is a e-2000 machine with all e-2000 boards in it running, (Let me ref-raze here) that has a hopper in it which has a e-1000 hopper board in it. A complete hopper with a E-1000 board in it, in a E-2000 machine. This e-1000 hoper works in the other e-1000 machine but does not work in the e-2000 machine, is this correct? I would think that the e-2000 machine needs a e-2000 hoper board in it. As you can use any of the test or reset buttons on this hopper while it's in the e-200 machine, but they work in the e-1000 machine. I am thinking you need to try a e-2000 hopper board in that e-2000 machine. As for reel assembly's, I believe you can maybe switch these, just not the reel reader boards from reel mechanism to reel mechanism as there is a reel reader control board that you can't see, behind the front plate of the reel mechanism that controls these reel readers. (This could be the something I missed) part. My email is Jackpot7@q.com and I will try to help you some, but with these questions backing up, my job, and my slot machine repairs, I am a busy guy at times, so please understand if response is slow sometimes.

Thanks

Expertise

I am an expert on old coin operated machines, slot machines, trade stimulator's, jukeboxes, old arcade machines, etc. I have been identifying these for people who respond to my web site listed below, for a few years now. In almost all cases I am able to tell them about their old coin operated machines, the year, the value, and other general information about their machines. I do not know much about soda vending machines, coin banks, or scales, but I will try to help you with these if I can. Experience

I bought my first slot machine, a .50 Cent Mills Black Cherry in 1969 and have been hooked from that time, I still have that Slot machine! Before that I found a open barrel full of old scraped jukebox wall boxes behind a restaurant, I wanted them all but never took a one of them. Anything that took a coin drove me nuts!
