Question

Estate Rocking Chair
Hello,

I recently purchased the attached rocking chair at an Estate Sale in the attic. The seat is composed out of horse hair/hay/burlap. The nails under the steat are not uniform and do not appear to be machine made. There is wire mesh in the seating, but I think it was an attempt to restore the seat in later years.

There are no markings that we can see on the bottom of the chair. Only a slight pencil mark, that we cannot make out.

So my questions is.. When/where/what/who made this beautiful chair? We are working on deciding if how much we should spend on refinishing, though the finish seems to be in pretty good shape

Thanks!
Jennifer

Answer
You do have a beautiful rocker there! I would say it was made in late 1800s due to the carvings on the side and the use of horse hair/hay. I would leave the rocker as is finish wise, and replace the seat material and padding. SAVE the old stuffing and material in a safe storage bag so that if you decide to sell at a later date, you can give the old padding to the buyer. The new seat material/padding will give you a better seat and be more comfortable.

CommentThanks for the tip about saving the stuffing. I was actually looking forward to tossing it. THANK YOU!
