Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Repair Teak / Mahogany Table

Question
Dear Rob,

I have an antique teak / Mahogany and Blackwood table that I would like to find out how to repair.

I have had the table covered to protect it with a cotton table cloth and then a plastic sheeting over that.  Where the table cloth finished and the timber was in contacting with the plastic sheeting, the table surface now has a sticky residue that I wish to remove.

I thought that I would be protecting it with the plastic sheeting as I cannot afford glass to cover (table is quite large).

I have used Marveer to try and clean it with and also warm soapy water and a gentle scourer which has not worked.

If you could help me that would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Michelle Beer

Answer
Try, in an out of the way place, to clean with mineral spirts and a fine Scothbrite pad[also called imatation steel wool. This should remove the sticky substance. It may leave a whit "cloud" which you can apply some Danish oil or similar product.
As a side note, I recomend you remove the plastic and forget the glass. A table top needs to "breathe" and when you cover any furniture with plastic or glass, it seems like their are always problems. It's this same reason I don't like table pads, they will stick and leave marks.
