Question

thimbles
Hi Barbara- I bought a small group of thimbles- these are the interesting looking ones. I see partial "sterling silver" stamps inside the two more simple silver ones. Only fagments of a makers mark in them (different). The ornate looking one and the goldish colored one have no marks. Any help identifying them would be wonderful. Thanks very much-Mark

Answer
Hello Mark.  Starting from the far left.  1.  may be brass, gold plated or gold...I would need to see marks on the band or inside the top of the thimble to be able to tell you anything more.  You could have it tested by a jeweler, which will tell you gold karat but not if it is plated or not.  2.  Sterling silver, birds on branch band pattern.  Look for a mark inside the top of the thimble...maybe an Old English S in a Shield, which is the mark of Simons Bros. Co. of Philadelphoa PA.  They are still in business today and they have a web site where you can find their mark.  3.  Silver but probably not sterling unless marked as such.  May be Mexican or South American.  They were made in the thousands for the tourist trade; contemporary.  4.  Sterling with panel band, but I can't tell you anything more without seeing a makers mark.  There are a number of books out on thimbles and many web site that may help you with more information.  Barbara
