armoir back bottom
armoir back bottom
QUESTION: I have an old armoire (1902 B%berkey%26gay) it has some damage on the back bottom from getting wet and is now all wavy and moldy. Will i lose a lot of value in the piece because i wish to replace the vainer. I can send you pictures if you think that helps. Where can i find out what it's worth in it's present condition? Thank you for your time

ANSWER: Hi Duncan
Nice to hear from you.
This piece currently has little value if any.
Get this moldy back off and replace it. I also note water damage to the structure and suspect if you up end the piece the bottom frame will need replacing also.
I was able to brighten and bring your photo more in focus and it looks to me like the side bottom trim is not original to the piece also.
But I see nothing that cannot be fixed unless there is warping on the doors or frame.
If you are handy this will be a great project.
After all the bad wood is removed, a wash with a mild household bleach solution should be done.
Great question

Eileen

QUESTION: I believe i can fix the inside vainer on the right hand side, it doesn't seem to be warped just loose. The paint can be removed and the one coat rack replaced. it's the outside I'm worried about. You've seen the back now heres the front. still worthless eh?

Answer
Hi again Duncan
I said the piece had little value if any in its present condition LOL.
Any work you do, if done well will certainly make it into something pretty nice and will certainly not devalue it.
We have several antique experts on site who could help you with a restored value.
Look on the same page you found me.
Sure would like to see an "after" picture.

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
