Question

chest of drawers
I have an old bedroom suite that I was trying to find out when it was made.  It was given to me, and has on back of chest of drawers this (M 1242 WAL).  Do you know what this stands for.  It has two night stands, vanity with 3 piece mirror, headboard footboard and rails, and chest of drawers (4 drawers). How do I find out what it is made out of and who made it?

Thanks,Glenda

Answer
Hi Glenda
Nice to hear from you.
This is a bit out of my area but I'll tell you what I can.
The design of this furniture is referred to as Waterfall because of the rounded edge.
This piece is veneer with some very nice inlays.
If there is no makers label on it no one can tell you who made it.
This furniture was mass produced in the 30's and 40's.
The numbers could only be deciphered by the company who made it and are only reference numbers.
Usually the wal means walnut but it usually refers to color and not actual walnut wood.
How nice you have the entire set. These sets were usually broken up over the years.
Hope this has helped somewhat

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
